Your Money & Your Brain by Jason Zweig.
The author discusses the physiology of the brain in the context of some common emotions such as greed, fear, regret and happiness. He then explains how this scientific understanding of the brain relates to our behavior with money. Another one of my top five favorites.
Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes by Gary Belsky & Thomas Gilovich.
This is a book about the science of financial behavior (also known as behavioral finance or behavioral economics) written in plain English. Definitely in my top five.
Emotional Currency: A Woman’s Guide To Building A Healthy Relationship With Money by Kate Levinson, Ph.D.
I love this book. It is very thorough and a great read. Although it is written specifically for women, guys can benefit from it as well by gaining insight into themselves and their partners. If you’re a woman and would only read one book from the list . . . I’d recommend this one.
Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
From one of the pioneers in Behavioral Economics, seeks to explain ways in which we make decisions with money and how they are not as ‘conscious’ as we might hope.
Mind Over Money by Brad Klontz, Psy.D. & Ted Klontz, Ph.D.
The basic premise of this book is that we all have some form of “money disorder.” The authors take a thorough look at various types of disorder, and provide tips on how to move past them.
Fooled By Randomness by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Not about emotions and money per se but this a treasured contribution to the investment reading list. I still use his examples about mistaking luck for skill in money matters. Kind of dense and maybe even a little geeky…one of my all time favorites.
Conscious Finance: Uncover Your Hidden Money Beliefs and Transform the Role of Money in Your Life by Rick Kahler, C.F.P. and Kathleen Fox.
Title says it all. An excellent book.
The Money Anxiety Cure by Koorosh Ostowari
The concept of money anxiety as a disorder came to the fore in the Great Recession. Ostowari helps people deal with anxieties through mindfulness and a somatic awareness approach. A big part of understanding our relationship with money is awareness and this book can help.
The Energy of Money: A Spiritual Guide to Financial and Personal Fulfillment by Maria Nemeth, Ph.D.
I found this book very helpful, especially some of the exercises! Not just a spiritual approach but one that is sensitive to the underlying emotions about money and I find it appealing for that reason.
Financial Intelligence: How to Make Smart, Values-Based
Decisions with Your Money and Your Life by Doug Lennick, C.F.P. with Kathleen Jordan, Ph.D.
Your Money Or Your Life by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez. A classic. Not so much about emotions but a very practical guide. The first 27 pages grabbed me. The authors share a process for how to spend money in ways that provide satisfaction and reflect your values.
The Heart of Money: A Couple’s Guide to Creating True Financial Intimacy by Deborah L. Price. I’m currently reading this one, but already finding some great information about money personality types and how couples interrelate. She has suggestions for how to have difficult conversations and how to avoid certain money traps and issues.
Financial Recovery: Developing a Healthy Relationship With Money by Karen McCall.
A personal story of a woman who feared there would never be enough. Combines an exploration of one’s relationship to money with sound tips for practical, everyday money management.
Wealth And Well-Being by Suzanne Lorenz, L.C.S.W. and Sam Beasley, C.A.D.C.
While written by therapists for other therapists, this book is filled with practical exercises and advice we all can use related to values and taking care of oneself.
